Finding a Specific Term of an Expansion

  • figure out the term number you're trying to find (remember that any expansion (x + y)^n has n + 1 terms)
  • find the values of n and k
    • n = the power the binomial is raised to
    • k = the term number you're trying to find - 1
  • plug into the equation and solve

Example #1

  • 3rd term of (x - 1)^4

Example #2

  • coefficient of the x^10y^2 term in the expansion of (x + y)^12

Example #3

  • middle term of (2x + 1)^8
